Haigler, Nebraska
Cornerstone Center for Community Service
Problem
Too many rural towns don't have a clear "home base." People don't know where to go to plug in, get help, or meet others. The result: fragmentation, isolation, and duplicated effort.
Solution
Haigler is a Dundy County village of 145 people (2020 census). After the Haigler Elementary School and its historic gymnasium closed, the Haigler Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) formed in early 2014, raised money to buy the buildings at 251 E Norman Street and reopened them in May 2014 as the Cornerstone Center for Community Service, which hosts a Saturday thrift store, a small library, children's activities, meeting rooms, a gym, a kitchen and seasonal festivals.
