Skibbereen, Ireland
Ludgate Hub
Problem
Too many rural towns don't have a clear "home base." People don't know where to go to plug in, get help, or meet others. The result: fragmentation, isolation, and duplicated effort.
Solution
Ludgate Hub is a not-for-profit coworking and digital hub in a converted former cinema and bakery on Townshend Street, Skibbereen, West Cork, announced in August 2015 by a steering group of business figures led by Glen Dimplex's Sean O'Driscoll and building owner John Field, and opened in mid-2016 with Ireland's first rural 1 Gbps SIRO fibre connection. It runs coworking, start-up support, education programs and events; job-creation figures reported by the hub, its sponsors and an independent study range from 54 to more than 800 and do not agree.
