Brattleboro, Vermont
Brattleboro Time Trade
Problem
Lack of cash, jobs, or formal credentials leaves many residents idle or isolated—even when they have skills and a willingness to help.
Solution
Brattleboro Time Trade is a time bank started in 2009 as an Antioch University New England graduate practicum by Emma Hallowell and Becca McMaster (Schaefer), launched as a 30-member pilot, incorporated as a 501(c)(3) (IRS ruling year 2014, EIN 27-2839686). Members earn one time credit per hour of service and spend credits with other members; organizations join too. Independent reporting gave about 250 members and 12 organizational members in May 2014 with 2,036 exchanges totaling 6,660 hours in 2013; the hOurworld directory showed 225 members, 947 transactions in the last year and a last transaction in October 2026, and the group scheduled a June 2026 annual meeting.
