New River Valley, Virginia

New River Valley TimeBank

Problem

Lack of cash, jobs, or formal credentials leaves many residents idle or isolated—even when they have skills and a willingness to help.

Solution

The New River Valley TimeBank grew out of 'Action 3: Establish a TimeBank in the NRV' in the June 2015 aging-in-place action plan of the NRV Aging in Place Leadership Team, an eight-organization group formed from the 2010 to 2013 NRV Livability Initiative, with the NRV HOME Consortium (staffed by the Town of Blacksburg) providing part-time coordination. It is a project of the nonprofit New River Valley Home, received a $10,000 Community Foundation of the NRV grant in 2016, and runs twice-yearly Repair Cafes at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Christiansburg and Public Living Room gatherings. The organization lists an NRV Tool Library as 'coming soon' and in December 2025 public radio reported the Blacksburg group was still hoping to open one; home maintenance and repair courses appear only on its own fundraising page. No source gives membership or hours figures.
