Alva, Oklahoma

Becky McCray / Small Biz Survival / SaveYour.Town

Problem

Every community has people who hold things together—organizers, founders, quiet leaders—but they're often unsupported, unrecognized, and burning out. When they leave or exhaust themselves, momentum collapses.

Solution

Becky McCray is a rural entrepreneur, cattle rancher and retail liquor store co-owner who lives in Hopeton, Oklahoma, a community of about 30 people near Alva in Woods County. She founded the Small Biz Survival site in January 2006, co-wrote Small Town Rules with Barry Moltz (2012), co-founded SaveYour.Town with Deb Brown in May 2015, created the biennial Survey of Rural Challenges in 2015 and published The Idea Friendly Guide in 2025.
