Nebraska
NCF Hometown Internships
Problem
Rural towns lose their youth to cities—and even when young people want to come back, there's no clear path, job, or invitation.
Solution
Nebraska Community Foundation's Hometown Internship program, launched in 2019, places paid summer interns with NCF affiliated community funds in their own hometowns. Cohorts were 23 interns in 16 communities (2022), 22 interns with a Keith County opening retreat (2024), 24 interns with a Norfolk opening retreat (2025, seventh class) and 22 interns (2026). Interns are paid from an anonymous donor gift matched by the host fund, housing is not provided, and travel and lodging for peer retreats are reimbursed; NCF publishes host deadlines, an MOU and a coordinator handout.
