Valley County, Nebraska
Community foundation + interlocal partners fund a 2-3 person backbone
Problem
Good ideas die from lack of follow-through. Volunteers burn out. Nobody handles the unglamorous work: scheduling, notes, tracking, reporting, coordination.
Solution
The Valley County Community Foundation Fund (opened April 2007) is an affiliated fund of Nebraska Community Foundation with a volunteer Fund Advisory Committee; NCF reported a $3.2 million unrestricted endowment in September 2024 and credits a bequest from John and Alyce Wozab. Valley County Economic Development is formed by interlocal agreement among the City of Ord, Valley County, the Ord Area Chamber of Commerce and Greater Loup Valley Activities, Inc., each appointing two board members, and lists two staff (executive director and deputy director) in 2026. Ord's 1 percent LB840 sales tax (approved 2001, renewed 2016) is administered through VCED and had loaned over $6.8 million to 71 businesses per the organization's site. The book's quarterly-report loan figures and coordinator job titles were not found.
