Grundy Center, Iowa

Community Flood Preparedness Network

Problem

Climate impacts hit rural communities hard—floods, droughts, wildfires, extreme heat—but large-scale mitigation planning feels distant, expensive, and overwhelming. Meanwhile, the damage accumulates.

Solution

Grundy Center (population 2,796 in 2020) is the Grundy County seat and sits on Black Hawk Creek, where USGS has a gauge and the Iowa Flood Center lists it as a monitored community; Grundy County was added to the 2008 federal flood disaster declaration and to a 2013 declaration. No source of any kind was found for a 'Community Flood Preparedness Network', a sandbag cache program, a rain barrel initiative, a local text alert system, or a 40 percent drop in flood insurance claims in Grundy Center.
